Is a Private Skincare Business Profitable?
June 1, 2023 · News
The skincare industry is booming, and with such high demand for good quality skincare products, there is great potential for private skincare businesses to become highly lucrative—however, as with any business venture, profit is never a guarantee.
While it is absolutely possible to build a profitable private skincare business, it’s important to have a solid understanding of the various costs that will impact your sales margins and ability to turn a profit.
Here we discuss the key costs that will affect how profitable a private skincare business can be.
What Costs Affect Profitability for Skincare Businesses?
Manufacturing Cost Per Unit
The individual unit cost of manufacturing the product itself is likely to consume the largest portion of your product margin, so it’s crucial to consider this when establishing your pricing strategy.
While manufacturing costs can differ depending on your chosen supplier, the factors that typically influence manufacturing unit cost include the type of product being produced, the raw ingredients used, how labour-intensive the manufacturing processes are and production volumes.
It’s also important to consider any additional costs associated with product development and testing, which can be significant. For this reason, many new skincare start-ups opt to partner with an experienced skincare supplier that offers a private labelling service which allows them to dramatically shorten product development and testing lead times.
Packaging Costs
Product packaging can also have a significant impact on your bottom line.
The skincare industry is traditionally renowned for producing beautifully presented products that encourage consumers to perceive their brand as luxurious and indulgent. However, many of today’s consumers also expect skincare brands to adopt packaging that is also environmentally friendly.
While plastic will typically be the most cost-effective packaging option, many brands are willing to assume the additional expense of using recycled or biodegradable packaging to uphold their brand values or meet consumer expectations.
Warehousing and Distribution Costs
Warehousing and distribution can also represent a significant cost for skincare businesses.
For smaller boutique businesses that are just starting out, simply storing products in your garage or a spare room in your home may be adequate. However, larger-scale skincare businesses will require a significantly more sophisticated warehousing arrangement to be able to adequately satisfy demand.
Distribution is another major cost that will impact your profit margin. The delivery fees associated with getting your products into stores or delivered directly to the consumer can vary significantly depending on factors such as:
- the size and weight of your products
- the distance and location your products will be shipped to
- how quickly the products need to arrive
- whether you will manage your distribution in-house or outsource it to a third-party delivery partner
Many direct-to-consumer skincare brands will pass delivery costs on to the consumer, however, if you’re adopting a wholesale model, delivery costs will need to be factored into your budget.
Marketing Costs
The skincare industry landscape is highly competitive and it’s easy for your products to get lost in the mix. A great marketing strategy is essential if you want to increase the visibility of your brand and earn a place in your target consumers’ consideration set—but it does come at a cost.
Your marketing overheads will depend entirely on which type of activities you decide to engage in. Some types of marketing activity can cost significantly more than others, so it’s important to carefully consider your strategy and continually evaluate the return you’re generating on your investment.
Some marketing costs you might want to factor into your strategy and budget include:
- building and maintaining a website
- search engine marketing (such as SEO and PPC)
- social media marketing
- email marketing
- content marketing (blogs, articles, social media posts, videos, infographics, case studies, podcasts etc.)
- influencer marketing
- PR campaigns
- other paid advertising such as print, television or radio advertisements
- promotional events
- direct sales
- customer service costs
It’s important to decide on the most appropriate mix of marketing activities for your business and do your research to get an understanding of how much you will need to invest to ensure your business is profitable.
Other Overheads
Running a skincare business can also come with a range of other overheads such as:
- labour/employee wages
- office space
- computer systems and software
- insurance, and
- stationery.
