Step 1: Share your vision for the company
Start off by sharing your vision for the company to ensure you’re both on the same page from the get-go.
Share your ‘big-picture’ ideas for the company. What do you want to achieve? What does your brand aspire to be? What are your brand values? How big do you want to get? How rapidly do you plan to scale the business up?
Clearly establishing what your vision is will not only help the manufacturer understand your business and brand, but it may also help you to further cement your ideas and direction for the company.
Step 2: Present the product concept
Next, you want to present the concept for your product, detailing key aspects of the various features and benefits you want it to include.
Start off by highlighting the product features you view as the most important (e.g. texture, fragrance, affordability, long-lasting, organic, key ingredients, colours etc.). It can also be helpful to identify any features you view as undesirable or unimportant.

Finally, it’s also helpful to identify who you plan to sell the product to.
Will you target teen, young adult, middle-aged or mature-aged consumers? The needs and requirements of a teenage consumer will be vastly different to that of mature-aged consumers, and it’s crucial that your product and branding reflect that.
It’s also important to consider things like how much your target consumer is willing to spend and where they like to purchase their cosmetics. Do you plan to sell your products through supermarkets, chemists, department stores, cosmetic-specific retailers or directly to the consumer? Once you’ve decided on a suitable pricing and distribution model, make sure you check that aligns with what your target consumers want.
