Should you wear sunscreen indoors?
August 31, 2021 · News
Wearing sunscreen each day is one of the best ways we can protect our skin from harmful solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Sunshine can be a cause of premature ageing and potentially deadly skin cancers.
But while it’s a given that you should apply sunscreen if you’re going outside, do you need to wear sunscreen when you’re indoors?
In this post, we discuss how sunscreen works to protect your skin and why it’s worthwhile wearing sunscreen even when you’re indoors.
How sunscreen protects your skin
Of the three types of UV radiation emitted by the sun, two types of radiation (including UVA and UVB radiation) are capable of reaching the earth’s surface. Each is known to cause skin damage which can lead to skin cancer.
Sunscreen products work to protect the skin by either absorbing or reflecting that radiation, preventing it from damaging the skin. While some sunscreen products only provide protection against one type of UV radiation, “broad spectrum” sunscreens provide protection against both UVA and UVB.
While sunscreen does provide valuable protection from the sun, it can’t prevent 100% of UV radiation from reaching your skin. That’s why it’s important to consider the sun protection factor (SPF) rating of your sunscreen. The higher the SPF rating, the greater the level of protection it provides. It is worth knowing that not all sunscreens are created equal!
Why it’s good to wear sunscreen even while indoors
The risk of sun exposure is very low while you’re indoors, so there would appear to be no need to use sunscreen. However, it still makes sense to apply sunscreen each day even if you’ll be spending the majority of the time inside.
Very few of us spend our entire day out of sunlight. From your morning and afternoon commute, to ducking out for your lunch or a coffee break, it’s likely that your skin will receive some level of sun exposure throughout the day. Even if you choose to apply a sunscreen with a low SPF rating, you’ll have greater peace of mind that your skin will be protected at all times.
It’s also a good idea to apply sunscreen if you’ll be in an indoor environment with lots of windows. While UVB radiation can’t pass through glass, a small proportion of UVA radiation can pass through some types of glass. Applying a sunscreen will provide peace of mind that your skin will be adequately protected. UVA is a known contributor to UV induced skin damage.
